Beverly Irby announced that community health care groups like C.W. Williams Community Health Center will be able to apply for federal grant money to support volunteer-based patient education in 2014 on applying for private health insurance under the Affordable Health Care Act's health exchange program. Ken Koontz announced that there would be a hearing in Superior Court on Thursday, May 23 at 2:30 p.m. on a lawsuit claiming that the City of Charlotte's private negotiating sessions with the Carolina Panthers were a violation of a 1960s permanent court injunction.

Ken Simmons announced that retired educators will sponsor Camp Greenville at Greenville Memorial AME Zion Church in Hidden Valley from July 7 through early August. The camp will focus on literacy skills, math and character development. Fee is $25 per week, with weekday sessions running 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Info: see Simmons.

Sarah Stevenson announced that Frances Hamlin's church, Mayfield Memorial Missionary Baptist, had compiled a list of bills under consideration in the N.C. General Assembly. A PDF of the bill synopsis as of May 1 is here. She said Mayfield is organizing bus trips to Raleigh on Mondays to support the NAACP's "Moral Mondays" protests.

Dianna Davis announced that the 2014 Charlotte African-American Festival will be held at the Grady Cole Center. Volunteers will be needed for the Feb. 22-23 event.

Michael Sexton sent in an announcement that the Concord Mills cinema handling the showing of "Not Today" is requiring that 400 $10 tickets be purchased this week, in advance of the showings May 31-June 6.
